Anyone for tennis?

News and notes from the U.S. Open

Jane McManus

Jane McManusJane McManus joined The Journal News in 1999, after working at The Daily News and Newsday. She covered the Jets for the Brett Favre season, and before that was a college beat writer and covered pro tennis. She plays roller derby as Lesley E. Visserate. She went to St. John's College in Annapolis, Md. and worked as a paralegal in Manhattan on cases involving the NBA and boxing, which is what sparked the whole sportswriting idea. That and watching the Knicks during the Patrick Ewing era. A trip to the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism honed her high-school paper skills, and she is an adjunct there for the sports journalism class that raised her. She runs, plays basketball and chases her two girls, Jean and Charlotte.

At least she’s honest

Serena Williams was hard to deal with last night in a press conference she said she only attended in order to avoid a WTA fine if she skipped it. That doesn’t ring true considering the fine would be about $10,000, which is about one-tenth of what she earned at this tournament alone, not to mention [...]

Jimmy practices

September
3

After Andy Roddick got by an ailing Tomas Berdych, his coach Jimmy Connors drew a crowd practicing on Court 5. This picture was taken by my camera phone, and shows clearly why I am a staff writer, not a staff photographer for the Journal News.

Anyway, here’s what caught my eye—Connors is wearing a sweater vest! [...]

Berdych retires

September
3

Andy Roddick got another gift yesterday when Tomas Berdych retired in the second set of a fourth-round match at the U.S. Open. The pair played a tiebreak in the first, won by Roddick, and down 2-0 in the second Berdych pulled out. He had been complaining about being unable to breathe and feeling queasy, which [...]

Kuznetsova through

September
3

The 2004 U.S. Open women’s champion Svetlana Kuznetsova needed just 13 minutes to go up 4-0 in her eventual win over Victoria Azarenka today, but things got a little harder after that.

At least her win means that one slightly familiar name advances to the quarterfinals in the sagging half of the women’s draw, where [...]

Blake rocks Ashe

September
2

James Blake again rocked Arthur Ashe Stadium last night. With two night matches before him, Blake and Stfan Koubek didn’t even throw up the first serve until 10:24, so when you look at it one way it was a quick match—even though it ended at 1 a.m. with Blake winning in four sets.

He was asked [...]

Simple karma

September

Agnieszka Radwanska said that when she went back into the locker room after upsetting No. 2 Maria Sharapova in the third round match yesterday at the U.S. Open, every player in there came up and greeted her. She was getting the congratulations when she realized that she got nothing, not even a smile, from [...]

Since Josh isn’t here tonight…

September
1

I’ll write up the match of the day in honor of Josh, who isn’t here tonight. I’m remembering him with a picture I took of him in the press room yesterday. (You can thank me later, Josh.)

Tomorrow on Ashe, some great matches:
No. 10 Marion Bartoli vs. No. 8 Serena Williams
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. No. 2 Rafael [...]

Decimated draw

September
1

It’s tough to mind many familiar faces in the top half of the women’s draw. There is 2004 champion No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, and then there is… well… No. 6 Anna Chakvetadze.

You have to follow tennis with an unmitigated passion to have heard of many of the other women. One of my colleagues, Adam [...]

Is someone up there a Bulldog?

September

John Isner must hava guardian angel, because the young American wildcard just took the first set in a tiebreak from top-ranked Roger Federer. This isn’t just a feel-good bon voyage like the one other yound players have at the hands of a better player, but this is an actual match.

Between Roger and Maria, it’s [...]

A run in the park

September
1

Before the matches started today I decided to get out of the tennis center altogether and go for a run. Usually I do between two miles and a 5K, but I don’t use a pedometer or anything like that, and I prefer to run on trails so I’m not really sure of my average milage [...]
