The Fed: Unleashing brilliant

September

Poor Feliciano Lopez. The guy looked like a top-10 player for two sets tonight, basically doing what he wanted on serve to the great Roger Federer. Lopez actually won 15 of 16 points on his first serve in winning the first set.

They were on serve in the second, with Federer up 5-4, when Lopez got himself three break points. 0-40. It was at that very moment when the world’s very best player began to play some truly sublime tennis and the result was an absolute massacre. Federer won his next 35 POINTS on serve, and 37 of 38, and ultimately won the match in four sets.

If you seed my story tomorrow on “LoHud.com,”:http://www.lohud.com you’ll know I felt this way. But it seemed Federer felt this way, too, as did a shell-shocked Lopez.

Lopez was asked why it happened, the 35 straight points, and this is what he said: “He is Federer.”

Yes he is.

Here’s the exchange Federer and a reporter, who was the one who alerted Roger to his streak over the last two-plus sets.

REPORTER: “Were you aware of it as you were doing it?”
FEDERER: “I don’t know. What are you talking about?”
REPORTER: “From the time you were down love-40 in the first game of the third set, you did not lose a point on your serve until that mishit (in the last game of the match).”
FEDERER (amazed): “That’s awesome. That last game or what?”
REPORTER: “The last game.”
FEDERER: “Oh, come on, what have I done??? I should have broken him to win 6-3 so I wouldn’t have to serve it out.”
