Labor day: NOT the night to get tickets to Arthur Ashe

September
3

This is probably the worst night session to get tickets to the U.S. Open. Because it’s Labor Day and everyone’s off, the best matches are all played during the daytime. It’s fairly standard.

What it’s left us with is No. 6 Anna Chakvetadze dusting off Tamira Paszek 6-1 in the first set in 28 minutes. Paszek nearly was broken in the sixth game, but held off a set point to (briefly) prolong the set.

This is a tough spot for Paszek, who appears a little overwhelmed. How young is she? Her birth date is Dec. 6, 1990!!! She never knew the fun we all had in the 80s. What a shame…

For Chakvetadze, this U.S. Open is a chance to advance her career after personal-best finishes at all three majors so far. Maria Sharapova is gone from the bottom half of the draw and other than fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, Chakvetadze probably the best chance to reach the final. She’s already beaten Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic this year, so she’s a decent player who would have at least a chance to win it all.

To those of us here tonight, at least Roger Federer will grace Ashe with his presence later, although I don’t expect it to last very long.

Andy Roddick was asked before about who he plans on rooting for in Federer’s fourth-round match.

“No offense to Lopez,” Roddick said, “but I’m kind of already preparing for Roger.”
