Simple karma

Agnieszka Radwanska said that when she went back into the locker room after upsetting No. 2 Maria Sharapova in the third round match yesterday at the U.S. Open, every player in there came up and greeted her. She was getting the congratulations when she realized that she got nothing, not even a smile, from Sharapova.

This might be because Sharapova was upset, but there comes a moment when the gamesmanship can give way to good will. It wasn’t so long ago that Sharapova was the 18-year-old, the neophyte on the WTA Tour getting her first big win. Perhaps she is too young to get that whole karma thing.

Another player said that Sharapova doesn’t interact with other players, that she walks in looking like she’s getting ready for a fight rather than a match. Clearly this hasn’t been her year, but between being coached by her father in an exclusive bubble and cultivating her image more than friendships, Sharapova still has some growing up to do.

Did we honestly think the Ice Princess was going to buddy up to Rudwanska and say “Hey chum, you played great, good luck with the rest of the draw, while I contemplate my earliest exit from a major in years”

Her grunting alone should tell you something when you consider that when she practices she never makes a sound.
She is, far and a away, my vote for most annoying athlete. 2nd is Danika Patrick…..
followed by Tonya Harding,...and any athlete that refers to him/herself in the 3rd person…(“Barry Bonds just needs to concern himself with what Barry Bonds can do on the playing field”)
