News and notes from the U.S. Open

Poka, Yuri

“Poka” is an informal way of saying goodbye in Russian.

I was inspired to look it up this afternoon by Yuri Sharapov, who, as we saw on CBS today, packed up his belongings and blew off the final game of his daughter’s three-set loss in the U.S. Open.

We’ve come to expect nothing less from Yuri, who appears to be the ultimate tennis/golf/soccer/gymnastics dad. It’s a shame, partly because his tough “love” is probably why Maria’s so good, but it’s also sad to watch in her low moments and this tournament was certainly one of them.

Maria will bounce back next year, especially if she can finally shake off the injury problems. Her shoulder injury clearly had a negative impact because her serve wasn’t reliable, even during Thursday night’s easy win.
